Akashi Sushi & Fusion Cuisine

10 Jun

As I slowly make my way through all the restaurants in the Lake Houston area, I love it when I discover one that is so good it makes me want to go back the next day! I’ve eaten at Akashi three times now and each time is better than the last. On my most recent visit, I took a few girlfriends with me so that everyone could try something different and get a better feel for their expansive menu. There were so many choices, from sushi and sashimi to Chinese, Japanese and unique salads.

The Happy Sumo Roll at Akashi Fusion Sushi is a mix of classic sushi and American comfort food.

Between the four of us, we ordered a Philadelphia Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, Volcano Roll, Thai Coconut Curry Chicken and Vegetable Lo Mein, as well as a couple house salads with ginger dressing. The silence that fell over our table for about 15 minutes is testament to how delicious everything was. By the next day I was ready to go back because there were so many other things on the menu that I wanted to try! The Kingwood crowd seems to agree – the restaurant was completely full at 8:00 on a weeknight. Despite the crowd, we had wonderful service. Our waiter was polite and funny and knew exactly when to pop by, but didn’t hover or try to talk too much (it was a girls night, after all)! The bar area in the restaurant is really cool, and the music playing was upbeat but not too loud, we were able to speak without having to yell at each other. They also had a TV on the back wall tuned in to CNN with the volume off, so I got to stare at Anderson Cooper while I enjoyed a delicious meal. If that’s not a perfect night, I don’t know what is!

Before you go, I suggest you check out their menu online at www.akashifusion.com otherwise you’ll spend a half hour trying to choose from the huge selection. They also have a Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/AkashiSushi  Akashi is located in the strip center at Northpark Dr. and Woodland Hills on the northwest corner.

Donuts with my Daddy

1 Jun

Today is National Donut Day! For many of us it is just another day and if we’re being honest, most people probably don’t care.  While it may seem like a holiday that was created in an effort to get us to spend more money on junk food that we really don’t need it has its roots in history.  The Salvation Army established this food holiday back in 1938.  It was to be held every first Friday of June and was meant to commemorate the nurses who delivered coffee and donuts to soldiers during World War I.  For most people, donut day is an excuse to scarf down the tasty treats when they otherwise may not, for others it as a day to remember the women who offered comfort to the soldiers who were far from home in a time of war.  For me, it is a day that reminds me of time spent with my Daddy when I was a little girl.

If there is a phrase that can describe me it would be Daddy’s Girl. My earliest memory is of spending time with my Dad, he and my mom took me to the circus and I got sick and we had to leave early. The moment that sticks out most in my mind is sitting on his lap, gazing at the bright colors of the costumes and the lights.  Perhaps that is why the first time my Dad took me to get donuts and I picked out the donuts with sprinkles, I asked my Dad for a “circus donut.”  It became a tradition for us.  Every Saturday morning my Dad and I would leave before anyone else woke up and go to Blue Ribbon Donuts in Dallas.   I loved it.  It was special, just for the two of us.  The tradition didn’t last forever though, it was quickly replaced by early morning soccer games but they are memories that I have never forgotten and often look fondly on.

I now have two children of my own, a girl and boy, 4 and 2 respectively, and my father is now sharing this tradition with them.  On Saturday mornings he picks up the kids and takes them to Shipley’s for “circus donuts.”  I love that my kids are getting to experience this for themselves.  At their young ages it is all about the donuts to them, but as they get older it will mean much more.  They will look back with love and fondness at the time they got to spend with their Granddad.  A bonding experience that many children don’t get to have with their grandparents, an experience that I am grateful that my children have been blessed with.   Happy Donut Day Daddy!  Thanks for the memories and for being such an awesome Granddad to my little monsters.  I love you.
